Aquarium Drunkard and Black Editions present:

Kazuki Tomokawa, the iconoclastic Japanese outsider-folk legend performs in Los Angeles for the very first time. An emotionally intense and raw artist by any measure, Tomokawa is a “Poet, singer, artist, bicycle racer commentator, essayist, actor, drinker. An artist who miraculously embodies the romance of the vagabond poet, a rarity in an age where our very freedom means we have forgotten how to live.” Tomokawa first established himself as one of Japan’s great idiosyncratic singers in the 1970’s. He became more widely known for his haunting performance as the mysterious singer that mirrored the killers’ conscience in Takashi Miike’s cult classic film Izo. This reach was only furthered by his powerful soundtrack to Cycling Chronicles: Landscapes the Boy Saw by the late, pioneering and controversial director Koji Wakamatsu. Tomokawa’s performances are known for their unmatched intensity and intimacy- this will perhaps be the only opportunity to ever see him in person on the West Coast. A show not to be missed!

Bill Orcutt returns to Los Angeles for an acoustic set of his completely one of a kind take on deconstructed blues and experimental guitar. From the ashes of the legendary Harry Pussy, Orcutt returns as a solo guitarist unlike any other. His recordings for VDSQ, Editions Mego and his own Palilalia Records are essential entries to any 21stCentury music library. We are beyond excited to host his next Los Angeles visit.

Itasca is the nom de plume of Los Angeles’ Kayla Cohen, a rising light in the singer/songwriter realm. Her wonderful 2016 album, Open to Chance, released on the Paradise of Bachelors label has won her wide reaching acclaim and finding her extensively touring the United States and beyond.

Aquarium Drunkard will be presenting special Vinyl Records/Vibes throughout the evening!

Known as the “screaming philosopher” for the guttural exorcisms of his voice at its most extreme, Kazuki Tomokawa’s mercurial songs in turn exude the soulful lyricism of a troubadour’s life lived to its fullest, on the furthest edge. A poet, singer, artist, bicycle race tipster, essayist, actor, and drinker, Tomokawa’s devastating music radiates such immediacy that it begs for the authentification that his down-and-out vagabond’s biography can’t help but verify. He found his voice in Tokyo’s freewheeling 1970’s underground, setting harrowing verse inspired by Osamu Dazai and Hideo Kobayashi to primal guitar playing for an ongoing string of avant-folk recordings as frenzied as they come. Until recently sung exclusively in Japanese, both the madness and introspection of his ragged delivery transcend the limitations of any individual language. Since 1993 he has recorded, alongside artists like Fushitsusha, Keiji Haino, and High Rise, for the venerable PSF Records label. His New York appearance with Blank Forms marks his first-ever performance in the United States.
